For more than 40 years, HSAG has worked to improve the quality of healthcare services for Medicare patients to achieve the best possible patient outcomes through our work as part of the Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) Program. The QIO Program is a national healthcare initiative whose primary focus is to improve the healthcare that Medicare patients receive.
HSAG has worked for over two decades on improving the health and quality of life of individuals with kidney disease. We work with dialysis facilities, organ procurement organizations, transplant hospitals, federal and state associations, and CMS to improve the care rendered to individuals with kidney disease. We also work directly with individuals with kidney disease and their families and caregivers to provide education, assist in their navigation of the healthcare system, and receive feedback from them to improve the work that HSAG conducts.
HSAG is the largest EQRO in the nation and provides quality review services for states that operate Medicaid managed care programs and fee-for-service programs. Our services affect 44 million Medicaid recipients, approximately 49 percent of the nation’s Medicaid population.
HSAG works on Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)-funded national healthcare survey projects that measure patient experience of care or health outcomes. These surveys allow patients or their caregivers to share feedback based on experience in various healthcare settings.

HSAG has provided consultation for services and programmatic changes such as developing quality assurance and performance improvement programs in nursing homes, reducing unnecessary hospital readmissions for health systems, and enhancing surveillance skills in all clinical settings to reduce facility-acquired infections.

HSAG has certified infection preventionists (IPs) that can address infection prevention needs throughout various clinical settings. Our IPs are certified through industry leaders, including a Fellow through the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) who has been a featured presenter at numerous CMS-hosted national calls with a focus on COVID-19 response during the height of the outbreak.
